Handwriting: Homeschool Students Learn Cursive

Teaching cursive in a homeschool setting is a joy. Setting your child off on a path of good writing will prepare your child for college essay writing and filling out applications for the workplace. Nothing makes a worse impression than sloppy or illegible handwriting. Homeschool students need to learn how to write properly. The first obstacle is proving to your homeschooler that handwriting is still a necessary skill. The personal computer has nearly made writing obsolete. The key word here is nearly. Although today's students and workers spend most of their time hammering away at a keyboard, we still use cursive in dozens of situations. You can mention the above situations to your homeschool student. If he or she is still skeptical, you can remind them that we still have to jot down quick notes, memos, and write letters to friends.

There are three main components that homeschool students must learn in order to master cursive: letter formation, letter size, and letter slant. Homeschoolers will need to learn these elements in that order. To teach letter formation, you can have your homeschool student focus on specific writing samples that showcase common mistakes in letter formation. Give them a spot on the page to rewrite the words correctly. When it's time to move on to spacing, you can use a popsicle stick. Your homeschoolers can then study letter slant by actually adjusting the angle of their page and drawing lines through the middle of each letter. The more parallel these lines are, the better.
